Abstract
Water-soluble chlorinated lignin is prepared by reacting nascent chlorine with a lignin obtained as a residue in the hydrolysis of lignincontaining cellulosic material with a mineral acid, such as hydrochloric acid, without supplying heat to the hydrolysis reaction mixture whereby the cellulose and hemi-cellulose are removed from the lignin-containing material. The chlorination is normally effected at below 100 DEG C. The nascent chlorine may be provided by reacting hydrochloric acid with an aqueous solution of a chloric acid salt; the lignin may first be mixed with the aqueous chlorate and then the acid added whereby oxidation of the lignin is also effected. In another method, the chlorine is provided by reaction between hydrochloric acid and a hypochlorous acid salt, or alternatively, by use of alkali hypochlorites alone. A further method comprises the reaction of hydrochloric acid on a manganese oxide such as MnO2; in a modification, the lignin may be oxidised with an aqueous solution of a permanganate yielding a lignin carboxylic acid and hydrochloric acid is then added to the mixture to effect the chlorination with nascent chlorine. Examples are given of the chlorination by the various methods above described, of a lignin obtained by hydrolysis of fine wood-flour with hydrochloric acid in two stages.
