Abstract

A vulcanizable composition is prepared by heating a mixture of a copolymer of 70-99 parts by weight of isobutylene with 30-1 parts of a diolefine, a finely-divided hydrated silica pigment having an ultimate particle size below 0,1 micron and a surface area of 25-250 square metres per gram and 0,4 to 3 parts by weight per 100 parts of copolymer of a non-discolouring promoting agent comprising N,N1-diphenylethylene diamine, a 2,6-dimethylol-4-hydrocarbon phenol, heat reactive oil-soluble alkylphenol-formaldehyde resins, cumene hydroperoxide, t-butyl perbenzoate, dicumyl peroxide hexachlorophenol, morpholine polysulphides, alkylphenol monosulphides, alkylphenol disulphide or phenyl hydrazine. Glycerol may be added to improve the thermal interaction between the silica and rubber. The mixture is cured by heating with a vulcanising agent. Suitable diolefines are butadiene, isoprene, dimethylbutadiene, pentadiene, cyclopentadiene and piperylene. Specification 756,857 is referred to.
