Abstract
Titanium dioxide pigments are obtained by hydrolysing titanium sulphate solution and calcining the precipitated titanium dioxide, the hydrolysis or calcination being carried out in the presence of a nucleating agent or seed respectively, capable of promoting rutile formation, wherein the precipitated titanium dioxide is treated in the presence of water with an ammonium compound of alkaline reaction, preferably NH4OH or (NH4)2CO3, t neutralise substantially all the sulphuric acid and produce a pH in the range 5-8. The precipitate is then washed to remove (NH4)2SO4 with water substantially free from calcium, magnesium, and silicate ions, preferably distilled water, and finally calcined at a temperature such as to yield a titanium dioxide pigment of good colour and substantially wholly in the rutile form. The temperature used is preferably not more than 100 DEG C. above the minimum temperature required to obtain 95% rutile formation. If desired, a water insoluble zinc compound, preferably ZnO, Zn(OH)2 or ZnCO3, may be incorporated with the precipitate after the neutralisation of sulphuric acid and before or after washing to remove ammonium sulphate.
