Abstract
846,032. Electrostatic switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 3, 1958 [Oct. 3, 1957], No. 31015/57. Class 38 (5). A relay comprising an electrostrictive element 6 fixed to a steel spring 5 which carries contacts 3 insulated from each other and the spring by mica 21. The co-operating contacts 1, 2 are carried by strips 9, 10 clamped in a stack 28 with the spring 5 and an arm 15 carrying a permanent magnet 14. Application of voltage to electrodes 7, 8 of the element 6 causes the spring 5 to bend upwards and the contacts are closed with a snap action due to the effect of the magnet on the spring 5. When the voltage is removed, the contacts re-open with a similar snap action. Instead of the magnet and spring being closest together when the contacts are closed, they may be so arranged when the contacts are open. In a modification, two magnets are arranged one on each side of the spring 5, and the contacts may open upon the application of voltage, or may be in a changeover switch. The element 6 may be of piezoelectric material so that the movable contacts move one way or the other to engage one or other sets of fixed contacts, depending upon the polarity of the applied voltage.
