Abstract
845,138. Moulding aircraft de-icing components. KONINKLIJKE NEDERLANDSE VLIEGTUIGENFABRIEK FOKKER N.V. Jan. 28, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1957], No. 2838/58. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VIII and XXXIII] An aircraft framework component, such as the leading edge of a wing or part of a tail, aileron or fuselage, having a de-icing " boot " which is inflatable or supplied with electrical heating elements or chemicals, is made in a mould which corresponds with, and imparts the correct aerodynamic shape to, the component, the structural and other features being within the component itself. As shown, Fig. 3, a leading edge 2, of rubber having internal passages 7 for inflation, for enclosing heating elements, or for supply of chemicals, is combined with an aluminium or other light metal honeycomb 5, or a hardened synthetic resin foam, enclosed between sheets 4, 6, of resin-bonded glass fibres, the layers being bonded together with epoxy resin. Wooden fillets 8, 9, having resin-bonded glass fibre strips on their inner faces, enclose the free edges of the component and the fillets 8 are enclosed in flanged members 19 for connection with the main wing structure. A mould 3, Fig. 5, of internal shape corresponding to the external shape of the component, has channels 12 through which a vacuum is applied via a connection 13 to mould the rubber layer 2. The remaining layers 4, 5, 6, in the case of 5 roughly shaped and carrying the fillets 8, 9, are then laid in succession after coating with epoxy resin and are pressed to shape during curing of the resin at 80-100‹ C. by a bag 14 connected via a tube 17 to a source of vacuum less than that applied through 13. The passages 7 are connected via 15 to an intermediate vacuum source. Any free spaces are filled with adhesive paste. To assist the vacuum a previous glass sheet may be laid between the mould and the layer 2. The inner surface of the layer 6 may be covered with a sheet of regenerated cellulose.
