In a manually-operated pipe coupling, for example, for connecting air lines 1, 2 in mines, and of the kind in which a ring 7 bears on the rear face of a union member 3b on the pipe 2 and has two diametrically opposed pivot lugs 8 that extend over the other pipe 1, a bail 9 pivoted in the lugs having arms which terminate in cams 11 adapted to bear on the rear face of the union member 3a so that by swinging the bail in one direction about the pivots thereof causes the cams to urge the ends of the pipes together, the pipes have plain end faces 4 and the cam surfaces are such that the full lift of the cams is not reached when the bail is swung in one direction sufficiently to bring the faces into contact with each other. As shown, the members 3a, 3b have annular grooves 5 for the reception of rubber rings 6 and conical outer surfaces complementary to the internal surfaces 12a, 12b of a ring 12 loosely fitted in a groove 12c in the ring 7 and to facilitate co-axial alignment of the pipes. The cams 11 are cylindrical surfaces having centres which do not coincide with the centres of the pivot bolts 10 for the bail. The latter are secured against accidental opening by bolts 15 which are pulled and rotated by pivoted handles 16 and urged downwardly by springs 17 when the handles are rotated to bring the pivots 18 thereof in line with slots 19 ; in the uncoupled state of the joint, the pivots 18 lie across the slots to hold the bolts in the retracted position thereof.
