Abstract
Olefins particularly ethylene but also e.g. propylene, are polymerized in presence of a solvent or diluent and also a catalyst comprising oxides of Al and Si with one or more oxides of Cr, Mo, V, Nb, and Ta heterogeneously distributed therein. (The term "heterogeneous" in the Specification signifies that when the material is distributed in particles represented by an order of magnitude of at least 1 micron, the parts are not identical in composition). It is preferred (a) to pretreat the olefin with an Al2O3-SiO2 composition which has been or is in contact with a saturated aliphatic, saturated cycloaliphatic, aromatic or alkylaromatic hydrocarbon, and (b) to pretreat the polymerization medium which is one of the said hydrocarbons with an Al2O3-SiO2 composition. The presence in the polymerization medium of a hydride of Be, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba is specifically exluded. Specifications 804,641, 804,642, 843,750 and Belgium Specification 551,676 are referred to.ALSO:A reaction medium for polymerizing olefins comprises a suspension in a solvent or diluent of solid material comprising oxides of Al and Si with one or more oxides of Cr (preferably), Mo, V, Nb and Ta heterogenously distributed therein (the term "heterogenous" in the Specification signifies that when the material is distributed in particles represented by an order of magnitude of at least 1 micron, the parts are not identical in composition). The heterogenous catalyst is preferably prepared by introducing into the medium (for which the usual hydrocarbons may be used): -(a) a composition of Al2O3 (and optionally SiO2) and one or more of the above catalytically active components and also (b) a composition comprising Al2O3 and SiO2 containing a concentration of catalytically active components lower than in (a) and preferably zero. The Al2O3-SiO2 starting material may also contain fluorine, e.g. 0.001-0.2 wt. %. Specifications 804,641, 804,642, 843,750 and Belgium Specification 551,676 are referred to.
