In the liquid separator 1 the cartridges 2 are formed from a filtering medium comprising a mixture of diatomaceous earth and fibrous material, the earth forming the major portion by weight, supported in a basket 13 and are capable of effecting both coalescing and separating operations when used to filter a hydrocarbon liquid containing entrained water. The contaminated liquid enters through the inlet pipe 9, the flow being distributed over the division plate 6 by a baffle 10, and a series of substantially horizontal settling trays 15, extending from the division plate 6 beyond the ends of the cartridges 2 to a drain pipe 16, serve to collect the separated water and transport it via the drain pipe 16 to a sump 17. The cleaned hydrocarbon passes through the perforated baffle plate 19 to the outlet 18. The horizontal extent of the trays 15 may be varied in accordance with the degree of separation efficiency required. The separation efficiency can also be increased by providing the cartridge material with a surface coating of a more hydrophilic character than the separator medium. Pressure gauges may be connected to the inlet and cartridge chambers for measuring the pressure drop. The separator can also act as an effective filter for solids.
