Abstract

844,155. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Feb. 25, 1957 [Feb. 29, 1956], No. 6340/56. Class 39(1). An electric discharge device, e.g. a thyratron, containing hydrogen is provided with a reservoir of hydrogen within the envelope from which hydrogen is releasable on heating and electric heating means, controlled by a thermostat, are provided to maintain the reservoir within a predetermined range of temperature so as to provide a substantially constant release of hydrogen from the reservoir whilst the device is in operation. The reservoir 5 may consist of a strip of palladium or titanium, in which hydrogen is absorbed, and which is heated directly by the passage of current therethrough, or a hydrogen containing compound such as titanium hydride held in a container heated by a separate heating element. The thermostat comprises a bimetallic strip 9 which, when cold, engages contact 10 so that resistance 14, which may be a barretter, is shunted through resistance 15. When the temperature of the reservoir 5 rises sufficiently to bring it within the predetermined range the strip 9 bends to open the contacts and the heater current is reduced. The current-limiting impedance may be fitted inside or outside the device and the bimetallic strip may be mounted independently of but near to the bulb 6. The current limiting impedance may be arranged in two or more parts, each to be short-circuited as required by a separate thermostatic device, e.g. to provide rapid initial heating of the reservoir. The thermostatic device may be made responsive to changes in supply voltage by being furnished with a heating winding connected to the same source as the heater for the reservoir. Some form of thermal " slugging " may be associated with the thermostat to give a time delay in heating and cooling.
