Abstract

833,898. Preventing fires and explosions. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Oct. 1, 1958 [Oct. 14, 1957], No. 32092/57. Class 47 [Also in Group II] An inert atmosphere in a storage vessel containing an inflammable liquid such as petrol, liquid alkali metal, molten titanium &c., is produced by feeding liquefied inert gas into the inflammable liquid in a finely divided state and in widespread dispersal in the liquid, evaporation of the liquefied gas being effected by heat exchange between the liquefied gas and the inflammable liquid. In the exemplified embodiment liquefied nitrogen from an insulated vessel 16 passes along an insulated conduit 13 to an elongated injection member 10 located in the base of an aircraft fuel tank 12, the member 10 having multiple small outlets 11 for dispersing the liquefied nitrogen into the fuel. Pressure within the vessel 16 by which the liquefied nitrogen is forced into the tank 12 is due to vaporization of some of the liquefied nitrogen in the vessel 16 due to natural influx of ambient heat or internal heating by an electric heater 21 or an internal coil pasing hot fluid medium. A relief valve 22 prevents the pressure differential of the tank 12 over the ambient pressure from exceeding a predetermined value. A flow control valve 23 in the conduit 13 is operated by a pressure sensitive device 24 in the tank 12 so as to open when the pressure differential of the tank 12 over the ambient pressure falls below a predetermined value.
