Abstract
833,327. Filters. SMITH, E. March 8, 1956 [March 10, 1955], No. 7018 /55. Class 46. Water, (e.g. drinking water), to be filtered is introduced by pipe 13 under a baffle 23 and passes upwards through a floating mass 20 of grains for example of polythene retained by a partition 11. The filtered water passes through nozzles 21 and out at 16. Cleansing is effected by passing water downwards from pipe 16 and withdrawing it together with floe through a pipe 25. The filter medium is at the same time agitated by rotating arms 27. The partition may be dispensed with, in which case filtered water is collected by a series of perforate pipes lying just under the top wall of the casing and communicating with the outlet pipe, Fig. 3 (not shown). Where the partition is provided the top of the casing may be open, Fig. 4 (not shown). In an alternative method of cleansing the medium is first agitated, after which the floe is drained away with or without a downward flow of water supplied through pipe 16. The polythene grains may be between one millimetre and one eighth of an inch in diameter and more than one size may be used.
