1,1-Diarylethanes are prepared from acetylene and mono- or di-alkyl-benzenes such as toluene or xylene in the presence of a sulphuric acidmercuric compound catalyst using 15-45% of the stoichiometric amount by the process of the parent Specification modified by using increased pressures of 1 to 10 atmospheres. Diluted acetylene may be used.
