Abstract

832,749. Machinery guards; tensioning driving belts. ELLIOTT & CO. Ltd., B. July 23, 1956 [April 21, 1955], No. 11547/55. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (4). In belt gearing wherein a vertical drill spindle 14 is driven by an electric motor 16 through stepped pulleys 20, 22, the belt 24 and pulleys are surrounded by a guard wall 26 on a base-plate 34 pivoted at 30 and supporting the motor 16 so that tilting of the guard about the pivot 30 to the dotted line position slackens the belt and exposes the pulley 20 to facilitate belt-shifting. The plate 34 extends under the pulleys 22 and 20 and fits around the headstock 12 to allow the downward tilting movement. The motor 16 is supported on a bracket 32 secured by bolts 42 in slots in the plate 34 to allow the belt tension to be predetermined. The belt tension is then maintained by the weight of the motor 16, the tension being greatest when the belt is nearest the pivot 30, i.e. at low drill speeds. Clockwise tilting of the plate 34 is limited by a set-screw 45 adjustable in bracket 32 and abutting the headstock 12. The guard 26 may be held in the tilted position by a spring-loaded plunger (not shown), carried thereby and engageable with the headstock. In a modification the pivot 30 is replaced by a pivot at the end of the headstock 12 adjacent the motor 16 and a spring biases the guard to the tilted position. The guard is then retained in the horizontal working position by a spring-loaded plunger carried by the bracket 32 and engaging a stop on the headstock 12. According to the Provisional Specification the lugs engaging the pivot 30 are slotted and the belt tension is predetermined by adjustment of the plate 34 relative to the pivot.
