Abstract
832,069. Composite metal sheets. CAMPBELL, J. R. Aug. 29, 1956 [Sept. 6, 1955], No. 26377/56. Class 20(2) [Also in Groups VIII and XXII] A composite honeycomb-type sheet or panel comprises upper and lower surface sheets 14, 16, Fig. 1, secured to opposite sides of a cellular core 12 formed of corrugated strips 18, Fig. 6, whose upper and lower edges are provided at least at the crests 26 with projections or flanges 20 extending in planes substantially normal to the plane of said strip, each strip being reduced in width at alternate crests so that the projections or flanges 20 thereat are receivable between the projections or flanges extending from the crests in the wider portions of an adjacent similar strip. The interfitting crests, and the flanges and surface sheets, are secured together by resistance welding or by adhesives. In the exemplified embodiment, the projections or flanges of each strip are continuous and are crimped to provide recesses at alternate crests to provide male crests receivable in adjacent female crests of an adjacent strip. The webs 22 of the strips 18 are provided with ribs 24. The interfitting crests define apertures 31, Fig. 5, which establish fluid communication between the cells of the core. The surfacesheets and core may be made of metal, paper, fibre glass, resins &c. In the construction described the surface sheets and core are of stainless steel and are secured together in a rotary seam welder 30, Fig. 5, which co-operates with an electrode 30<SP>1</SP> having a corrugated shape conforming to the shape of the strip 18 mounted thereon. The electrode 30<SP>1</SP> is moved in the space between the surface sheets 14, 16 until the strip 18 mounted thereon is interlocked with a strip 18 already in position, after which the rotary seam welder is translated across the surface of the outer sheet.
