Abstract
A process for the production of orthophthalic or isophthalic acid comprises oxidizing the corresponding toluic acid or formyl toluene in the presence of orthophthalic anhydride in the liquid phase by means of oxygen or ozone in the presence of an oxidation catalyst in the substantial absence of halogen while continuously removing water of reaction as vapour. The reaction preferably takes place at about 200 DEG C. using a molar ratio of anhydride to acid or aldehyde of 1 : 2 to 6 : 1 in the presence of cobalt or manganese acetates. The phthalic anhydride may be added as such or formed in situ. When the meta isomer is used isophthalic acid may be filtered off from the hot reaction product, when the ortho isomer is used the hot reaction product may be hydrolysed with water to give phthalic acid.
