Abstract
831,597. Motor vehicles. REID, J. P. M. March 21, 1956 [March 23, 1955], No. 8533/55. Class 79(3) A motor vehicle water radiator 20 or similar element is air cooled by being disposed in and closely embraced by a smooth upwardly sloping duct 21, 22 having a forwardly facing inlet 24 and an outlet 25 disposed in positions on the vehicle where the dynamic air pressures during vehicle travel are above and below, respectively, atmospheric pressure, the duct walls diverging between the inlet and the element and converging between the element and the outlet. As further shown the outlet 25 has flaps 26 which may be adjusted manually or thermostatically, and the outlet 25 has a flap valve 28 leading hot air by a passageway 29 into the interior of the vehicle, e.g. for demisting the windscreen 30. The radiator 20 may be formed in two parts in series in the duct. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the engine exhaust pipe is led into the part 22 of the duct, and the part 21 of the duct has a bleed taking off cold air for cooling the brakes or providing combustion air for the engine, an oil radiator being disposed behind the water radiator in the duct. In a further embodiment, (Fig. 6 (not shown), the part 22 of the duct is formed in two parts leading to outlets straddling the bonnet. It is stated that the drag of the element (e.g. the radiator) in the duct will be reduced and may even be converted to a positive thrust if the heat transfer to the air is sufficient.
