Abstract

831,451. Cooling systems for marine engines. COVENTRY CLIMAX ENGINES Ltd. June 9, 1958 [July 19, 1957], No. 22963/57. Class 64(3) In a marine driving unit comprising an internal combustion engine 1 and a propeller 2 driven through a shaft 3 and rotatably mounted on a casing 5 which is fixed to the engine and encloses the propeller shaft, the engine has a closed cooling water circuit which includes a heat exchanger located at a level below the surface 15 of the water surrounding the casing when the unit is in use for transfering heat in the circuit water to the surrounding water, the heat exchanger being positioned within and in thermal contact with the casing, or, as shown, comprising a lower compartment 7 of the casing. In the cooling system shown, hot water from the engine 1 is directed through a pipe (not shown) to a jacket 20 surrounding the exhaust gas manifold and flows thence through a pipe 22 or, as determined by a thermally actuated valve 24, through a by-pass pipe 23. The pipe 22 conducts the water to a reservoir 25 from which it flows through a pipe 26 to the lower casing compartment 7 in which it is cooled. From the compartment 7 the water is returned to the engine through a pipe 18 either by thermosyphon action, or, as shown by means of a pump 17. The circuit operates above atmospheric pressure and a safety valve 30 is provided in a removable filler cap 29.
