Abstract

831,221. Spin - stabilized projectiles VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS (ENGINEERS) Ltd. March 4, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 10454/57. Class 9(1) A spin-stabilized missile for discharge from a rifled gun has a warhead 1 attached to a casing 2 containing a propellant 3, the casing 2 being secured to a base 4 provided with a collapsible fin structure. The base 4 is secured in a cartridge case 5 and has four parallelogram-shaped studs equi-spaced around its periphery. The front and rear edges 6A, 6B of each stud lie in planes which are perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the projectile, while the side edges are inclined to the axis, so that the studs fit into grooves of the rifling. The base 4 is shaped to provide a venturi nozzle 7 having a thick wall through which extend pivot pins 10 passing through bosses 9 of fins 8, the fins being curved to fold into a recess in the outer surface of the base 4. Each boss 9 is received in a well in the base 4 and each bore for the pins 10 is inclined to the axis of the projectile and parallel to the side edges of the studs 6. Springs 13 urge the fins to the expanded position and a cap 14 screwed on the base 4 holds the pins 10 in position. The mouth of the case 5 overlies the fins 8, preventing them from opening out until the projectile is fired. An electric igniter 16 is used to fire the propellant 17 in the cartridge. The fins 8 may be steel, light alloy or a synthetic plastic material. Specification 778,618 is referred to.
