Abstract

The process of the parent Specification, whereby fabrics, e.g of cotton, are stiffened by impregnating with an aqueous dispersion of a vinyl or vinylidene polymer containing a non-ionic dispersing agent which is soluble in water at room temperature and up to about 40 DEG C. but insoluble at higher temperatures and a water-soluble polyvalent metal salt, drying, treating with a volatile solvent for the polymer and allowing the solvent to evaporate, is modified in that the metal salt is replaced by a salt of an alkyl- or aryl-amine or of a quaternary ammonium base having aliphatic, aryl and/or cycloaliphatic substituents. Specified salts are decylamine sulphate, dodecylamine acetate, octadecylamine acetate, benzyl pyridinium chloride, cetyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, dimethyldidodecyl ammonium acetate and stearyltrimethyl ammonium nitrate.ALSO:Aqueous dispersions of the parent Specification comprising (1) polymers of vinyl or vinylidene compounds, (2) non-ionic dispersing agents which are soluble in water up to about 40 DEG C. but insoluble at higher temperatures, and (3) water-soluble polyvalent metal salt coagulants are modified in that the coagulants employed are water-soluble salts of alkyl- or aryl-amines or of quaternary ammonium bases having aliphatic, aryl and/or cycloaliphatic substituents. Specified salts are decylamine sulphate, dodecylamine acetate, octadecylamine acetate, cetyldimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, dimethyldidodecyl ammonium acetate, stearyl trimethyl ammonium nitrate and benzyl pyridinium chloride.
