Abstract
830,232. Deflecting propulsive jet on aircraft. SHORT BROS. & HARLAND Ltd. Feb. 21, 1958 [Feb. 21, 1957], No. 5917/57. Class 4. In a jet-propelled aircraft the propulsive jet may be directed vertically downwards through a branch nozzle at a position at or near the centre of gravity of the aircraft to provide direct lift during landing and take-off. The jet pipe 10 carries a branch 11 and a pair of pivoted deflectors 12, 18 mounted on relatively offset transverse pivots 13, 19 for operation between the positions shown in the figures under the control of jacks 17 and 23 respectively, the ram 22 of jack 23 operating within a sealed chamber 24 for operation of deflector 18 by an integral lever 21 which operates in a slot 101 in the jet pipe. In the positions shown in Fig. 3 deflector 12 exposes the aperture to branch 11 and seals off the rear end of the jet pipe and deflector 18 abuts deflector 12 at an angle thereto to assist the flow of gas into branch 11, as indicated by arrows. To ensure their correct relative movements the deflectors are interconnected by gearing (not shown).
