Abstract

830,198. Road vehicle spring suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. (Ford Motor Co.). Oct. 8, 1957, No. 31458/57. Class 108(2) An independent suspension comprises a torsion bar 34 in splined connection with a pivotally mounted support 32 on the frame 11, and in splined connection at its other end with a member 38 (Fig. 4). The latter is rigid with a control arm 36 which is pivotally connected at its other end to a transverse tubular frame member 16. The axis of the pivot of the connection between the arm 36 and the member 16 passes through the centre of a universal joint 22 on the road wheel drive shaft 23 and the centre of the joint between the torsion rod 34 and the support 32 on the frame 11. The member 38 carries a horizontal outwardly extending pin 42 on which is rotatably mounted a shackle 54 carrying a forwardly extendng horizontal pivot 63 on which the wheel supporting member 27 is mounted. A telescopic strut 66, which may comprise an hydraulic shock absorber, is rigid at its lower end with the wheel supporting member 27 and is pivotally connected at its upper end to the vehicle frame. The axial position of the end of the torsion bar 34 may be adjusted relatively to the member 38 by rotaton of a nut 48 secured by a bolt 51. The axes of the pivots 42 and 63 may be inclined at an angle which is not a right angle. U.S.A. Specification 2,757,747 is referred to.
