Abstract
<PICT:0830122/III/1> As shown a stock ingot 3 is drip melted in a vacuum into a molten pool 10 by electron bombardment of ingot 3 and pool 10 from an annular tungsten cathode 13, pool 10 being maintained above a solidified ingot which is continuously lowered through a water-cooled mould 6. Cathode 13 is heated by a transformer 18 and maintained at a negative potential to ingot 3 and pool 10 by a D.C. supply 19. An annular focusing electrode 21 is at cathode potential. The power input to the heating system is controlled by regulating the D.C. supply 19 and the ratio between the heat supplied to the electrode and that to pool 10 is altered by vertical adjustment of the electrode position. For more precise regulation, separate cathode arrangements for ingot 3 and pool 10 (Fig. 2, not shown), may be employed.
