Abstract
839,945. X-ray tubes. MACHLETT LABORATORIES Inc. July 3, 1958 [July 15, 1957], No. 21341/58. Class 39(1). An X-ray tube comprises two dielectric envelope portions connected by an annular metal terminal which surrounds the interelectrode space, the terminal carrying a shield internally of the envelope which shield also surrounds the interelectrode space, extending at least as far as the cathode and anode, and overlying the seals between the terminal and dielectric portions ; means are provided for maintaining the shield at a potential midway between those of anode and cathode. The seals and envelope are thus protected from bombardment by secondary electrons and also coldemission electrons. In Fig. 1, the shield is formed by two flanged members 53, 54 fixed to a flat ring 57 attached to a metal envelope insert 13. The ends of the shield extend well beyond the ends of the anode and cathode structures, but Fig. 6 shows a modification in which the ends of the shield are co-planar with the ends of the electrode structures. The shield of Fig. 6 also embodies a baffle 70 having a central orifice 71. The invention may be applied to either centre-grounded or end-grounded tubes.
