Abstract
839,794. Toothed gearing. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Daco Instrument Co.). April 8, 1958, No. 11037/58. Class 80 (1). Apparatus for testing the angular play in gear trains comprises a reversible electric motor 10 adapted to be coupled to the input of a gear train in a housing 24. The output of the train is locked and the motor 10 energized to apply a predetermined torque first in one direction then the other. The angular movement of the motor shaft 18 is read off a graduated disc 27 thereon against a pointer to give an indication of the play. An alternative method of measuring comprises a light source passing through holes in a disc 27 to act on a photo diode to give impulses which are amplified to operate counters. The apparatus can also be used for determining the break-away torque of the train by gradually increasing the applied torque by the motor until the output of the train commences to move. Also the train having a slip clutch therein this clutch can be adjusted in accordance with a desired torque to be transmitted.
