Abstract

839,231. Sewing machines. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 13, 1957 [Sept. 14, 1956], No. 28852/57. Class 112 Also in Group XXXIV] Frames, feeding. In a sewing machine having a bed 1, a main shaft 36 journalled longitudinally in the bed, a standard 2 rising from one end of the bed, and a bracket arm 3 carried by the stand-. ard and terminating in a head 4 overhanging the bed, the bracket arm incorporates two sets of aligned bearings 382, 387 and 390, 394 arranged on axes parallel to the main shaft, a pair of attachment-operating shafts 379, 380 are journalled in said bearings, shafts 379, 380 are connected at the head end to attachment-actuating mechanism, and shafts 379, 380 are connected at the standard end by arms 410, 407 and links (not shown) to adjustable eccentrics (not shown) on the main shaft for imparting oscillation individually to shafts 379, 380. A puller-feed attachment driven by shaft 380 comprises a bracket 449 secured by screws 450, 451 to the machine frame and formed with vertically spaced lugs 452, 453 A rod 455 journalled in lug 452 is also journalled in a bolt 457 screwed into lug 453. A spring 459 biases rod 455 downwardly. A feed roller 475 is journalled on a pin 474 fixed in a yoke 469 carried by rod 455. A collar 460 on the latter has an arm 461 which co-operates with a cam 466 rotatable by a handle 468 for lifting rod 455 and the feed roller. An arm 480 is coupled to the latter by means of a one-way clutch contained in a cavity 476 in the roller. Arm 480 is connected by a ling 481 to an arm 482 fixed to shaft 380. Reverse movement of the feed roller prevented by one-way clutch means in a. cavity 484 in the roller. The bed 1 is formed with an opening 497 and a flat surface 499 which, it is stated, are associated with a lower puller feed mechanism which may be driven from shaft 36. A flat surface 264 formed on the head 4 may carry, it is stated, a differential ruffling mechanism driven by shaft 380. Head 4 is also formed with aligned bores 488, 489 for accommodating an oscillating rod of thread-laying mechanism driven from the lever 55, 58. Aligned bores 490, 491 in head 4 may receive a trimmer bar, and a further bore 492 receives a pin for preventing rotation of the trimmer bar. A plate 70 on arm 3 covering the aperture for bearing 61 is provided with a scewed stud 71 for supporting a sewing light. Stitch-forming. The needle bar 44 carries a pair of needles 48 and is slidable in bushes 45, 46. A collar 49 on the needle bar has an arm 53 connected by a link 54 to one arm 55 to a two-armed lever the hub 57 of which is fixed to a transverse shaft 59 disposed at right angles to the side walls of the bracket arms 3 and journalled in bearings 60, 61 on the latter. The other arm 58 is connected by a pitman 62 to a crank pin 67 on shaft 36. Hub 57 is disposed between shafts 379, 380, and the arms 55, 58 are disposed on either side of the latter. Collar 49 carries a needlethread take-up arm 50 which projects through a slot 51 in the head and is formed with thread holes 52. A plate 70 covering the aperture for bearing 61 is provided with a screwed stud 71 upon which a swing light is adapted to be attached. Needle guides. A bracket has a vertical leg 530 secured adjustably to the bed by a screw 532 and a horizontal leg 534 to which an arm 535 is secured adjustably by a screw 536. Adjustably secured to arm 535 by a screw 537 is a needle guide 538 having bevelled faces for guiding and positioning the needles 48 relatively to the loopers 78. Work supports. A plate 18, disposed undr the cloth plate 17, is supported on bed members 19, 20, 21, 22, and in turn supports the throat-plate 23 and two flanking plates 27, 28, all of which are disposed in an aperture in the cloth plate. The throat plate is screwed to plate 18, end plates 27, 28 are secured to the latter by spring clips. Plate 27 is formed with a finger hole 32 to provide for easy removal. Lubrication. The bed 1 is formed with intercommunicating oil-tight compartments 14 and 15 formed under the standard 2 and arm 3 respectively. Compartment 15 is separated by a transverse wall 7 from an open compartment 10 containing the feed and the loopers. Oil mist is created in compartment 14 by an oil slinger 501, and in compartment 15 by a gear 270 and a counterbalance 105. An oil-catching plate 502 provided in arm 3, has two spouts 504 which supply the bearings 60, 61 for shaft 59. A wick 506, secured to plate 502, conveys oil to the upper bearing 46 for the needle bar 44. The outer bearing 38 for shaft 36 is lubricated via channels 510, 511, 512, and the inner bearing 37 via channel 515. Oil seeping outwardly of bearing 38 is returned by an oil slinger via channel 514. A wick-filled tube 518 interconnecting compartments 10 and 15 receives oil through an opening 519 and distributes it in compartment 10 via wick-filled tubes 520, 521. The feed advance shaft 287 is wick-filled and has an oil collecting opening 523 in the end projecting into compartment 15. A channel 524 in the base of the bed receives oil through an opening 525 in compartment 15 and distributes it in compartment 10 via a horizontal wick-filled channel 527 and vertical wick-filled channels 529. Specifications 839,232, 839,233, 839,234 and 839,235 are referred to.
