Abstract

839,190. Separation of plutonium. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Aug. 17, 1945 [Aug. 18, 1944], No. 21109/45. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). Plutonium in its reduced state is adsorbed from solution on to zirconium phosphate or barium iodate. Zirconium phosphate may be supported on glass wool, silica, or powdered glass. The solution preferably contains mineral acids, for example nitric or hydrochloric acid mixed with phosphoric acid. The solution may be passed through a column of the adsorbent, fission products washed out with a mixture of nitric and phosphoric acids, and then the plutonium dissolved using 7N nitric acid. In the separation of plutonium from neutron irradiated uranium, the greater part of the uranium is preferably removed before the adsorption of the plutonium. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of aluminium, titanium, and zirconium zeolites as adsorbents. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
