Abstract
Aerosol shaving cream packages comprise a valve-controlled pressure-tight container containing a liquefied propellant gas, such as propane, butane, isobutane, dichlordifluormethane or dichlortetrafluorethane, and a shave cream which comprises an aqueous soap solution with a total content of less than 4% by weight, preferably 1-3%, of alkali metal, ammonium or alkylamine soaps, or soaps of primary or secondary alkanolamines, the content of triethanolamine soaps, if present, being in a minor proportion based on the total soap content. Propane, butane, and isobutane propellants are used in amounts of 2.5-3.5% by weight, while dichlordifluormethane and dichlortetrafluormethane are used in amounts of 5.5-7.5%. The soaps present generally comprise soaps of saturated fatty acids of 12-18 carbon atoms, the soaps of myristic, lauric, and coconut oil fatty acids amounting to less than 50% of the total soap content, and 10-30% of the total soap content may consist of soaps of oleic acid or soaps derived from oils containing oleic acid. The composition generally includes 0.5-10% (by weight of the soap solution) of hydrophilic organic colloids, such as alkali metal, ammonium, or amine salts of polyacrylic acid of mean molecular weight up to 500,000, preferably 100,000-200,000, polyacrylamide with a mean molecular weight of 10,000-20,000, copolymers of methacrylamide and methacrylic acid, vegetable gums, e.g. tragacanth, salts or derivatives of alginic acid, pectins, methyl and ethyl cellulose, alkali metal and ammonium salts of carboxymethylcellulose, starch, polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polyvinyl alcohol. The compositions usually also include 1-15% of castor oil or of fatty acids or of such derivatives of fatty acids as are water-insoluble but easily emulsified, for example hydroxy fatty acids, fatty alcohols, fatty amides, certain ethylene oxide condensates of fatty acids or alcohols, or esters of fatty acids with lower alcohols or with polyhydric alcohols, such as isopropyl palmitate or glycol or glycerol monostearate. Also, 1-3% of nonionic emulsifiers, for example fatty acid alkanolamides, or fatty acid esters of polyhydric polyoxyethylenated alcohols such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monolaurate, are generally also added.
