Abstract
838,839. Making valves. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Sept. 15, 1958 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 29448/58. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXIX] A spool valve with precisely formed ports is made by first lapping the spool into the body of the valve and then cutting the ports in the wall of the body with a non-rotating tool having a cross-sectional area conforming to the desired shape of the ports. The spool 20 which has lands 21-25 formed thereon is lapped into the valve body 10. Slots 32 are cut transversely of the axis of the body to reduce the thickness of the body in the areas selected for the ports 26- 31 which are then eroded by a spark machining process in which the electrical discharges between the body and a tool produces a port of corresponding non-circular cross-section and with parallel walls. The lands may be of a different width from the ports. In another form recesses 48 replace the slots 32 and I-shaped ports 49 are eroded in the body 40. Specification 681,148 is referred to.
