Abstract
<PICT:0838658/III/1> Ammonium sulphate is obtained by spraying dilute sulphuric at different levels into a tower down which a co-current of gases from a coke furnace passes, and the quantity of dilute acid injected is such that the acid content does not decrease by more than 1% before the acid reaches the crystallizer at the base of the tower, although in the crystallizer the acid content is between 2.5 and 3.5%. The coke furnace gases enter tower 3 at 4 and are withdrawn below truncated conical sheet 5 through pipes 7 and cyclone 26, where acid is separated. Dil. H2SO4 is supplied by pump 9 at different levels of tower 3 by atomizers 8 at rates regulated by valves 10, 24 so that the pressures at the atomizers are the same regardless of height. The atomizers 8 should be identical and of large diameter, to avoid choking, producing droplets of average 2 mm. diameter. The liquor passes down through shoot 11 to crystallizer 2 whence coarse (NH4)2SO4 crystals are withdrawn by pump 12 to vat 13, whence crystals pass to drier 14 and mother liquor to 2. Liquor is withdrawn through 16 to tank 17, where water and acid are added as necessary, and recycled by pump 9 through lines 21, 22. The latter includes heat exchanger 23, whereby all, or part, of the recycled liquor may be heated, so that excess water may be evaporated and carried off with the gases. Pump 25 circulates the liquor in the crystallizer.
