Abstract

838,092. Elastic-fluid turbines; stuffing-box substitutes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 3, 1956 [Oct. 7, 1955], No. 28631/55. Classes 110 (3) and 122 (5). In a condensing steam turbine shaft gland sealing arrangement a pocket 16 in the H.P. end gland 3, is connected by pipes 9, 19 and a valve 8 with a pocket 6 in the L.P. end gland 3<1> and both pockets 16, 6 are connected through an automatic reducing valve 106 and a pipe 100 with a source of sealing steam, another pocket 11 in the gland 3 and further away from the turbine cylinder than the pocket 11 is connected through a leak-off valve 17 with the condenser 13, and the reducing valve 106 is responsive to the pressure difference between the sealing steam supply and the pressure in the pockets 16 and 6 to automatically increase the supply of sealing steam to those pockets when the pressure therein drops and thereby tends to maintain the pocket pressure substantially constant and above atmospheric pressure. The outer ends of the glands are vented by pipes 5 and a further pocket 14 in the gland 3 may be connected to an intermediate stage of the turbine. A throttle valve 105 is provided before the valve 106 in the sealing steam supply line 100. Specification 781,505 is referred to.
