In a Leclanche dry cell, the depolarizing mass 7 is surrounded by an electrolyte support 6 except for an aperture at the base of less width than the width of the mass, the zinc electrode 5 surrounds both the mass 7 and the support 6 except for an aperture of less width than the width of the cell and the positive terminal is a conducting foil 3, e.g. of conductive plastic. The foil 3 is in contact with the steel case 1 of the cell and the case is separated from the electrode 5 by an insulating cylinder 4. The cell is closed by a steel lid 9 in contact via a second conducting foil 10 with the zinc electrode. In another form, Fig. 2 (not shown), the edge of the lid is embedded in the insulating cylinder.
