Class 120(2) Doffing mechanism for a spinning or like machine has doffing and donning elements mounted on a single shaft which is under cam control. Empty cops 47 are held prior to application on the spindles 7 by rails 43, 44 carried by the shaft 41. The rail 43 carries springs 48 with internal diameters slightly larger than the upper ends of the: cop tubes and the rail 44 carries claws 50 that grip the tubes at their lower ends. Openings 49 in the claws 50 enable members 6 to contact the tubes 47 when necessary. Also carried by the shaft 41 is a rubber sheet 45 (several sheets may be used where necessary) that is pierced with cuts 46 in star formations. spaced to correspond with the spindle spacing. Under the control of a rotary cam cylinder 80 the shaft 41 may swing through an arc until the sheet 45 is held above the spindles 7. The sheet 45 is then lowered until the cops 8 pass through openings formed by the cuts and all cops regardless of the condition of their windings are securely gripped when the sheet 45 ascends. Release of the cops 8 from the spindles 7 is assisted by members 6 which are caused to move underneath the cops 8 and apply an upward force to them. After the sheet 45 and full cops have been raised, the shaft 41 is rotated to bring the empty tubes 47 over the spindles. Further lowering of the shaft 41 results in the tubes 47 being placed on the spindles 7 where they are held during release from the claws 50 by the members 6. Each claw 50 may be provided with a rear projection shaped to hold yarn away from the spindle as an empty tube descends in order to avoid bights of yarn being trapped in a manner likely to cause breakage. Shaft 26 is provided with a torque compensator.
