Abstract
836,524. Making tubular fittings; Hanging. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Sept. 17, 1958 [Sept. 17, 1957], No. 29820/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of forming a nipple on a tube 1 comprises forming an opening 2 at the desired nipple position of smaller area than the desired nipple bore, heating the tube in the region of the opening, positioning within the tube bore, adjacent the opening, a first ball 8 of larger cross-section than the area of the opening, positioning further balls 9 of larger diameter than the first ball within the tube bore on opposite sides of the first ball and urging the further balls on opposite sides of the first ball towards the first ball and longitudinally of the tube bore to force the first ball into the opening to form or partly to form the nipple. A die 3 supports the tube bend and spaced punches 5 and 6 enter the legs of the tube to exert pressure on the balls. The first operation of the punches only forces the smaller ball partly through the opening so a further ball 9<SP>1</SP> is inserted in one of the legs of the tube so that the smaller ball is forced out of the tube by a second operation of the punches. Finally another ball 9<SP>11</SP> is inserted in the tube to enable one of the larger balls 9 to be forced through the opening to form the nipple to the die contour (Fig. 5). For forming a nipple with a slot-like opening two smaller balls are placed over an elongated slot, as shown in Fig. 6.
