Abstract
836,352. Creels. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO. Ltd., W.T. May 10, 1956 [Feb. 10, 1955], No. 4072/55. Class 120(2) Means for continuously handling bodies of indefinite length, such as cables, comprises a rotatable flyer 10, and a capstan 23 having mounted thereon at least two radially extending spindles 32 each of which can be moved to a position coaxial with the axis of rotation of the flyer and are arranged for the accommodation of a drum 45 containing a cable. As shown, a frame 11 rotated by a motor 16 through an electrical speed control unit 17 and a belt 18 is provided with outer guide pulleys 12, 13 mounted at the free end of one arm of the frame, and an inner guide pulley 14 located tangential to the axis of rotation of the frame; the latter is dynamically balanced by a weight 15, and the flyer incorporates braking means 21 actuated by a pedal 22. Journalled within a vertical hollow pillar 24 is a shaft carrying at the upper end thereof a spider having three horizontal arms each provided with a spindle 32 on which is mounted a roller adapted to run on a flange supported by the pillar; the spider also carries a circular plate provided with three holes each adapted to receive a plunger biased upwardly by a spring and moved against the spring by a linkage connec- ted with a foot pedal. The flyer 10 feeds the cable 19 to a pulley 20 from which the cable passes upwardly to a pulley 48 of a festoon storage bank 49 consisting of upper and lower pulleys mounted rotatably about fixed axes, the floating lower pulley 50 being capable of vertical movement in sliding guides and weighted to impart tension to the cable; alternatively, the pulley 50 is coupled to the control unit 17 whereby the speed of the motor 16 is adjusted. The cable passes around the pulley 50 and then to a guide pulley 51. When a non-driven flyer is employed the weight of the pulley 50 is such that during operation and in the normal position thereof the pulley rests on a spring buffer fixed to the ground.
