Abstract

Light-coloured semi-ebonites are obtained by vulcanizing a natural or synthetic rubber stock containing a light-coloured filler, e.g. titanium dioxide, barytes, zinc oxide, whiting or clay, with a compound which liberates sulphur during the vulcanization process, elementary sulphur being absent or insufficient to cause discoloration, i.e. in general less than 5% by weight. The preferred amount of sulphurliberating compound is 5 to 25% by weight of the rubber, suitable compounds being organic polysulphides, e.g. N,N1-dithiomorpholine and tetra-alkyl thiuram disulphides. The rubber stock may comprise, in addition to natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. polymers and copolymers of 1 : 3-butadienes, a synthetic resin material, e.g. a polymer or copolymer of styrene, or phenol formaldehyde, in the place of part of the rubber.
