Abstract

A resin-coated sand, suitable for making metal-casting moulds, is prepared by mixing sand with a liquid phenol-formaldehyde resin, preferably a resol, adding a mixture of dry ground resins comprising a major proportion of a phenol-formaldehyde novolak resin and a minor proportion of a xylenol-formaldehyde novolak resin and a hardening agent for the resins, preferably hexamethylenetetramine, and mixing the combination to form the coated sand. A lubricant, such as zinc stearate, oleic acid, dibutyl phthalate, and other wax-like or oil-like material or high boiling point esters, may be added to improve the free-flowing of the product and to improve the strength of the moulds. This lubricant may be added to the sand-liquid resin mixture, or may be mixed with the dry resins prior to adding them to the sand, or to the prepared coated sand. A preferred mixture is prepared by mixing 100 parts of sand with 1 part of a liquid resol and 3 parts of a dry ground mixture consisting of 75 parts of a phenol-formaldehyde novolak resin, 25 parts of a xylenol-formaldehyde novolak resin, and 15 parts of hexamethylenetetramine. 0.05 parts of lubricant may also be added.ALSO:A resin-coated sand, suitable for making metal-casting moulds, is prepared by mixing sand with a liquid phenol-formaldehyde resin, preferably a resol, adding a mixture of dry ground resins comprising a major proportion of a phenol-formaldehyde novolak resin and a minor proportion of a xylenolformaldehyde novolak resin, and a hardening agent, preferably hexamethylenetetramine, and mixing the combination to form the coated sand.
