834,892. Disintegrating &c. apparatus. WILLEMS, P. Aug. 9, 1956 [Aug. 12, 1955], No. 24369/56. Class 59 A disintegrating, kneading and mixing apparatus comprising a container and at least one disintegrating member rotatable along the inner wall of the container and co-operable with said inner wall for treating a material by shearing and frictional working, whereby the material is pressed out of reach of the, or each, disintegrating member along the inner wall of the container is characterized in that the material is admitted transversely to the, or each, disintegrating member over the whole working scope thereof, the material being sucked in and conveyed along the inner wall of the container by the, or each, disintegrating member acting as a pumping member, and in that the inner wall of the container is provided with projections such as ribs, teeth, arms or the like. As shown in Fig. 1, a container 1 has disposed therewithin rotors 2, 2a rotatable in opposite directions and provided with disintegrating arms 3, 3a respectively, co-operating teeth 1a, 3b and 3c, 3d being provided on the inner wall of the container and on the sides of the arms 3, 3a. The rotor 2 is mounted on a hollow shaft 4 which may be displaced axially. The container is provided with an outlet 9 controlled by a hand wheel 10. The upper ends of the arms 3a may be connected by a concentric ring 11. Heating or cooling medium may be supplied to a jacket 14. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the inner wall of the container is provided with upwardlyinclined helical ribs which may be smooth to bring about an acceleration or deceleration of the material moving along the container wall or toothed to have a tearing and shredding affect on coarse particles of the material. In another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the inner wall of the container has ribs provided with sharp edges. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the container ribs are wedgeshaped and have sharp upper edges. In another modification, Fig. 8, friction bodies 27 pivotally mounted on the upper ends of the rotatable arms 3 are adapted to press against the container wall and the arms 3 and the ribs 1c on the container wall may be provided with interengaging projections 18. In a further modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), a ring fixed to the upper ends of the disintegrating arms is adapted to rub against a ring fixed to the container wall. In another modification, Fig. 11, two disintegrating, kneading and mixing units are arranged one above the other. The upper unit is provided with an inlet hopper 21, supply pipes 22 and an exchangeable perforated base 23, and the lower unit with an exchangeable sieve 25 leading to an outlet 26. Resistant material may be pressed between the arms 3 by means of a ram 27. In another modification, Fig. 12, in which the container 1 is supported within a container 106, the arms 3 are mounted on an axially adjustable driving shaft 4 and have teeth 102 projecting between teeth 101 provided on container ribs 1b. A ring 103 secured to the lower ends of the arms 3 and a ring 107 secured to the lower edge of the container 1 are provided with tools 104, 108 for effecting a preliminary disintegration of the material. The upper edge of the container has secured thereto a hollow cylinder 109 provided with guide blades 110. In an alternative construction, the teeth 102 are of rectangular cross-section and the teeth 101 sharpened at their lower edges. Various other modifications are described. For example, the container wall and the disintegrating arms may be provided with bores or other recesses which may produce mechanical pulses up to supersonic frequencies when the recesses are moved past each other. Further, the container may be tiltable or it may be arranged horizontally. Still further, a plurality of operating stages may be arranged one behind the other on a pipe whereby the material may be disintegrated as it passes through the successive stages. In addition, an electric current may be passed through the material. Specification 774,275 is referred to.
