Abstract
834,827. Cutter edges. MORRIS, J. E., SMITH, G., and MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. Sept. 13, 1957 [Sept. 13, 1956 ; Jan. 17, 1957], Nos. 27984/56 and 1837/57. Class 5(1). [Also in Groups VI, XXII, XXIII and XXXVI] According to both Provisional Specifications, the sharp cutting edge of a tobacco cutter may be formed by diamond particles fixed to a metal knife body. In the first Provisional Specification; bonding of the diamond particles into the heated steel or brass knife body under pressure is referred to. The second Provisional Specification describes an electrodeposition process in which a graphitecoated mould 2 and asphaltum-varnished spigot 6 are placed in a plating bath and nickel is deposited up to the line 3 to form half a disc knife which is then coated peripherally with diamond dust 4 before a further deposition of nickel, if necessary preceded by a thin copper coating, is made up to the line 5 to form a body only requiring bevelling of its top surface to complete the knife, which preferably has an included edge angle of the order of 20 degrees. A similarly formed tobacco-cutting knife may have a straight or detachable strip-like cutting edge incorporating the diamond particles. Both Provisional Specifications state that the knife bodies may be chromium-plated to protect them from tobacco juice attack.
