822,467. Stuffing-box substitutes. LICENTIA PATENT - VERWALTUNGS - G.m.b.H. Jan. 24, 1956 [Jan. 24, 1955], No. 2357/56. Class 122 (5). Sealing means for a rotatable shaft 1 passing through a casing 9 containing a pressure medium comprises a sealing-ring 3 that is slidably mounted in the casing and sealed thereto by a packing 10 or a flexible bellows 11 and has a sealing face forming a gap with an opposed complementary surface on a flange 2 secured to or integral with the shaft, the sealing face being provided with grooves 4 which extend radially outward from its inner circumference for a certain distance. The gap width may be increased by supplying pressure medium from the casing to a circular groove 5 in the sealing face near its outer periphery either through conduits 6a, 6b, pipe 7 and valve 8 or through conduits 16, 17 and valve 19. In a modification, the groove 5 is divided into segments each communicating with the easing through a pipe 7 and valve 8. The flange may be provided with labyrinth grooves 12.
