Abstract

822,329. Winding yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 4, 1956 [July 21, 1955], No. 21123/55. Class 120(2) Apparatus for winding linear material on to a carrier wherein at least two carriers are driven by a driving roll and wherein when one carrier is full it can be moved away and another put in its place, the material being broken or cut between the two carriers, is characterized in that the carriers are resiliently supported on arms projecting radially from a common hub substantially co-axial with the driving roll, so that each carrier can be swung round the driving roll on the hub while still being driven by the roll an entrainment means causing the material to wrap round each empty carrier as it takes the place of the full one and rupturing the material and stopping it from being wound on to the full carrier. In the arrangement shown drive roll 1 frictionally drives the carrier 3 mounted at the end of an arm 4 pivoted at 5 to an arm 10 mounted on a common hub with the drive roll 1. The arm 4 is resiliently loaded so as to press the carrier 3 into contact with roll 1. A duplicate arrangement is mounted diametrically opposite. In operation tow is wound on the carrier 3 until it is full, the arm 10 is then rotated to bring an empty carrier into the position 3 and to transfer the full carrier to the lower position where it can be doffed and replaced by an empty carrier. Entrainment means which may be a notched disc and a movable guide are provided to start the tow winding on the empty bobbin and that part of the tow leading from the full to the empy bobbin is broken or is cut. There may be three or four carriers arranged symmetrically around the drive roll.
