Abstract

821,815. Grinding and polishing. RAUCH, W., and SCHNIZLER,-A., [trading as METABOWERK CLOSS RAUCH & SCHNIZLER K.G. June 9, 1958 [June 15, 1957], No.. 18315/58. Class 60. [Also in Group XXX] A method of grinding or polishing the surfaces of workpieces 18, Figs 3 and 4, in stages, comprises conveying the workpieces, each on a truck 10, past a plurality of grinding or polishing machines, the trucks in addition to their advancing movement past the machines being lifted, lowered, or tilted so that the surface of the workpiece is abutted against the tools 19 of the machines. Each workpiece is mounted directly or through an intermediate member on a holder 17 on the upper part 10 of the truck. A bolt 8 at each end of the upper part cooperates with slotted vertical bars 6, 7 secured to an under part 5 of the truck which has rollers 3 running in guide rails 2 and is advanced by an endless belt or chain which extends past a plurality of polishing or grinding machines and is provided at one end of the machines with a drive device and at the other end with means for reversing the trucks. The upper part of the truck has a pair of axles 11, 12 of different lengths on which are wheels 13, 14, each engaging separate guide rails 15, 16. ' During advancement of the truck, the upper part is moved relative to the under part by the configuration of the rails 15, 16 so as to present the surface of the workpiece to the grinding or polishing wheel 19 ; the configuration of the rail may also determine the pressure exerted between the workpiece and tool. In another embodiment, a curved workpiece 20, Fig. 6, may be mounted in holders 24 secured to a spindle 23 carried in a member 21 and having a lever 25 which, during advancement of the truck along the rails 2, has a roller 26 cooperating with a guide 27 to pivot the workpiece so that its surface engages the tool 19 ; wheels 13 cooperate with guide rails 15 to tilt the member 21 about an axis parallel to the rails 2. In a further embodiment, the workpiece may be moved transversely to the direction of travel past the polishing or grinding machines by the engagement of rollers 34, Fig. 8, on the under part of the truck with guides 33 on a carriage 30 which has rollers 31 engaging transverse rails 29 and is resiliently held in a central position by springs. Movement of the carriage is transmitted by guide rails 15<SP>1</SP>, 16<SP>1</SP> mounted thereon to the wheels 13, 14 on the upper part of the truck which is connected to the under part by a rod 37 engaging a transverse slot 38, the under part being advanced by the conveying chain 35. The upper parts of the trucks may be interchangeable, and the workpiece and/or grinding or polishing wheel resiliently supported.
