Abstract

820,891. Sampling apparatus. BIRMING- HAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Feb. 21, 1957 [April 14, 1956], No. 11430/56. Class 58. Apparatus for extracting a sample from a falling stream of material, such as coal or ore, comprises an open-mouthed container 27 which is carried, at constant speed, through the falling stream by an endless conveyer having a pair of endless chains or belts 23 carried on pairs of sprockets or pulleys 3 and 7, mounted on shafts 5 and 9, journalled in bearings 11 and 13 within a frame 1 having an inlet 33 and an outlet 35 for the falling stream. The shaft 5 is driven by a motor 15 through braking mechanism 19 and reduction gearing 17. When the container is on the upper run of the conveyer, it is carried mouth upwards through the stream and collects a sample, which is tipped into a hopper 37 as the container is carried round the sprockets or pulleys 3. Preferably, the width of the container, in the direction across the conveyer, exceeds the width of the stream. The empty container is carried mouth downwards on the lower run of the conveyer and collects no sample as it passes again through the falling stream and is then returned to the upper run. The aperture of the mouth of the container may be adjustable. Time switches may be installed to operate the apparatus intermittently and a trip switch 39, operated by the container, may be installed to bring the latter to a halt in the position 29.
