Abstract

820,897. Valves. ARO EQUIPMENT CORPORATION. Oct. 16, 1956 [Aug. 13, 1956], No. 31446/56. Class 135. A two-stage relief valve comprises a first stage relief valve, means for opening the first stage relief valve wide open once it cracks open, a second stage relief valve adapted to be opened by pressure from the first stage relief valve, detent means to hold the second stage valve open until the pressure acting thereon is substantially zero and an adjustable orifice in the outlet from the second stage relief valve. On the pressure exceeding the setting of the first stage relief valve the ball valve member 14 is unseated permitting a build-up of pressure in the conduit 22, the outlet of which is closed by the valve member 26 of the second stage relief valve. The pressure in conduit 22 quickly reaches a value sufficiently high to act on the diaphragm 18 to bow it down and open the first stage relief valve to its maximum extent. The ensuing build-up of pressure in the conduit 22 cracks open the second stage relief valve which opens to its maximum position. The adjustable orifice 42 is set such that the back pressure is just sufficient to maintain the first stage relief valve wide open for continuous flow. The adjustable orifice may be replaced by a restricted orifice if adjustment is not required. Detent means in the form of a spring-loaded ball 34 coacting with a groove 32 on the valve member 26 are provided to hold the second stage relief valve open until the pressure in the conduit 22 drops to substantially zero.
