Abstract

<PICT:0820164/III/1> Hydrogen required for the catalytic hydrogenation of a vaporizable hydrocarbon is produced by passing the vaporized hydrocarbon, or a portion thereof, and/or a hydrocarbon-containing tail gas from the hydrogenation, together with steam over a cobalt-molybdenum or a cobalt-molybdenum-potassium catalyst, followed by the removal of all or a substantial part of the water. The reaction is preferably carried out between 450 DEG C. and 650 DEG C. at a liquid feed rate not exceeding 5 kg. per kg. of catalyst per hour and an oil to steam weight ratio below 10 : 1. The process is specially applicable to materials containing sulphur or nitrogen, and especially to the hydro-refining of creosote in one form of the invention, a crude benzole stored in 1 is fed via preheater 3, where it is mixed with steam and heated to 550 DEG C. to the converter 4, which is packed with cobalt molybdate. The product H2 is freed from water in condenser 5 and separator 6, and from H2S and CO2 in scrubber 7 and thence to the gas holder 8. The H2 is compressed to 100 lb/sq. inch by compressor 9. The benzole from 6 is passed to flash chamber 11 where it is vaporized, and the vapour and gas enter the preheater 12 and reactor 13. The products are condensed and separated in separator 15. The liquid is stored in 16 and the gas is mainly recycled.
