Abstract
829,849. Waveguide terminations. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Jan. 24, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1957], No. 2482/58. Class 40 (8). A hollow pipe waveguide is terminated in an impedance which closely matches its characteristic impedance in both resistance and reactance over a selected band of frequencies f1- f2. A waveguide 5 of rectangular cross-section has a movable metallic piston 6 at one end forming a reflecting termination and a resistive probe 7 which penetrates the waveguide to an adjustable extent and is mounted with its metalplated end 10 in a holder 11 threaded in a wider face of the waveguide. The probe 7 may be of ceramic at least part of which is coated with carbon. Its D.C. resistance, the distances X and Y, and the distance from the centre line of the guide 5 to the centre of the probe, are adjusted to provide a terminating impedance the resistive component of which closely matches the resistive component of the characteristic impedance over the frequency range f1-f2, and the diameter D, of the probe is chosen so that its reactance substantially cancels the reactance of the reflector as seen from the probe, over the same band. The probe may advantageously be a quarter of a wavelength from the reflector at frequency f1 + f2/2.
