Abstract

828,852. Foam - coated floor coverings. WITCO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. Jan. 16, 1958 [Jan. 16, 1957], No. 1636/57. Class 140. A backing is applied to a woven or non- woven floor covering by coating the base with a thin layer of a foamed natural or synthetic elastomer and destroying at least some of the cellular structure of the foamed material at atmospheric temperature during or subsequent to spreading the coating and thereafter drying or otherwise setting the coating. The coating may be applied by a lick roller or doctor blade which as it spreads breaks open a substantial number of cells of the foamed material. The thickness of the applied layer is also controlled by the same means. The base may be pile carpeting, haircord carpeting, sisal or jute carpeting or a woven floor covering made from synthetic resin impregnated paper fibres.
