Abstract
827,989. Steam traps. SPIRAX-SARCO Ltd. Oct. 21, 1957 [Oct. 20, 1956], No. 32014/56. Addition to 755,178. Class 64(2) In a steam trap in which a valve plate such as a disc 9 is held on to the top face of a boss 4 to close an inlet passage 5 and an outlet passage 6, by the pressure of steam flowing into or formed in the chamber 8 in which the 'disc 9 is loosely contained, the disc is formed with a central recess 9a which registers with the inlet passage 5 and a surrounding annular groove 10 which extends across the outlet passage 6. A cap 7 screwed on to the boss 4 to form the chamber 8 bears annular cooling fins 12 and for tightening purposes is non-circular in section. In cold conditions, air or condensate from the inlet passage 5 lifts up the disc 9 to escape through the outlet passage 6. In the form shown a plug 14 bears a perforated-tube strainer 15 and closes a pocket 13 so that the strainer seats at the other end of the pocket at one end of the inlet bore in a boss 2. The Provisional Specification describes also a modified trap which has for example a well formed in the top of the boss 4 and perhaps containing a valve-seat disc and a gasket secured to the bottom of the well and apertured to correspond to the inlet and outlet passages. A protuberance on the top inner surface of the cap for limiting the upward travel of the valve plate may be domed in this form. Cooling fins are formed on the trap body as well as on the cap.
