Abstract

A cracking catalyst is prepared by adding to an aqueous sodium silicate solution, while maintaining the pH at at least 10, an aqueous solution of one or more salts of magnesium and/or calcium in an amount from 1/50 to 1/5 mols. of the salt per mol. of SiO2 in the silicate solution, adding to the mixture a solution of an aluminium salt and adding aqueous ammonia solution during at least the final stages of the aluminium salt addition to maintain the pH between 9.0 and 10.5, filtering the resultant hydrogel from the liquid and washing and drying it. The SiO2 concentration prior to the addition of the aluminium salt is between 3 and 9%. The solution of the magnesium and/or calcium salts is 0.05 to 0.5 molar. Before, during or after the addition of the magnesium and/or calcium salts, acid is added to obtain a pH of the mixture between 10 and 10.5. More acid may then be added to lower the pH to between 9.0 and 10.5, preferably 9.5, and this is maintained during the addition of the aluminium salt and the ammonia. The finished catalyst may contain between 12 and 30% by weight of alumina, and between 1 and 9% by weight of magnesium and/or calcium calculated as MgO and CaO. An alkali metal ammonium salt may be added to the sodium silicate before the addition of the magnesium and/or calcium salts. Examples are given.
