Abstract
An alloy for addition to a molten iron bath to produce bendable cast iron has a composition within the following range in per cent by weight: .Si.40.0-80.0 .Mg.5.0-30.0 .Rare earth metals.0.5-6.0 .Fe.and impurities the balance The alloy may be added to a bath of hypoeutectic iron in amount between 8 and 30 lbs. per ton of iron, the iron being at a temperature of 1350-1450 DEG C. Pig iron containing less than 0.5% Mn may be melted in the presence of a flux together with ferro-silicon to provide a melt having a silicon content of 1.0-1.5%, and the addition alloy is introduced by plunging therein an apertured cage of iron or steel containing the alloy.
