As one or more sets of threads 12, 13 is or are fed to a flat warp knitting-machine by thread guide bars 5, 6, a staple fibrous web 14 is fed by plates 19, 20 mounted, the one on arms 17 connected with hanging cheeks 18 which carry the thread guides and the other on the cheeks; and the web is engaged by elements 16 carried by the arms 17, which elements with the plates 19, 20, are moved in similar fashion to and synchronously with the thread guides, so that loops of the warp threads and of the web are interknitted. Thus is produced a fabric having a warp-knitted backing 1 and a facing of loops 4 of the web. Pile loops of the web may be sunk by a vertically reciprocated plate 32, the length of the stroke of which may be varied to vary the length of the pile loops. The machine may be provided with bearded needles, or, as shown, with latch needles 8 carried in a bar 7, holding down element 10 and a latch opener 11. The backing may be of warp chains 2 and laid in threads 3. The web may be of natural fibres of animal or vegetable origin, or of synthetic fibres of cellulosic origin, or nylon or other man-made fibres, or of mixtures thereof. The fibres may be self-coloured, or dyed to provide solid colours or variegated effects. Pattern effects may be produced by stitch variation, e.g. by thread guide manipulation. The fabric surface may be brushed or teaseled. The web may be supplied from a carding unit via a conveyer unit and over a beam.
